An Appeal to the European Union

According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on the European Union to establish a definitive target date for Ukraine's accession, pointing to 2027 as a key benchmark. He stressed that Ukraine aims to be technically prepared for membership by the end of 2027 and intends to open all negotiation clusters in the first half of 2026. This push for a clear timeline comes as Ukraine continues its complex path toward European integration while defending itself against Russian aggression.

Negotiations and Ukraine's Strategy

Substantive accession talks between Ukraine and the EU commenced in December 2025, marking a significant milestone. The stance of key European figures is crucial in this process, including:

  • Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán
  • EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas

Zelenskyy emphasized the need to prevent future generations from facing a scenario where Russia could block Ukraine's EU membership for decades, stating:

"We must not allow future leaders or the next generation to face a situation where Russia blocks Ukraine's EU membership for 50 years."

In a related move, the European Union has decided to reduce the size of the Russian diplomatic mission to 40 personnel, as part of its broader strategy in response to Russia's aggressive actions. Zelenskyy's statement reflects Ukraine's strategic approach to European integration, underlining how a clear timeframe is vital for domestic stability, reform momentum, and strengthening ties with the EU. The acceleration of negotiations also signals Ukraine's effort to solidify its international standing amidst ongoing conflict.
