Despite EU Divisions, Zelensky Urges Tougher Sanctions on Russian Business

In a statement shared on Telegram, Zelensky emphasized that sanctions must remain effective, as Russia’s economy should not be granted any relief while Ukraine continues to suffer significant economic damage caused by the conflict.

He stated,

“When Russia uses every euro and dollar to prolong this war, it is both immoral and self-destructive to allow Russian businesses to operate without feeling the impact of the conflict.”

The Role and Challenges of Sanctions

On September 11, EU ambassadors failed to reach consensus on extending personal sanctions against Russia, due to objections from Slovakia and France. These countries sought to remove certain Russian oligarchs, including Mikhail Fridman and Alisher Usmanov, from the sanctions list. The current sanctions are set to expire on September 15, following a previous extension on March 14.

Zelensky also highlighted the scale of the ongoing conflict, noting that Russia deploys around 500 'Shahed' drones daily. He argued this is no time to relax sanctions and insisted that pressure on Russian business must be maintained to generate clear demands within Russia for an end to the war and the hostile policies toward Ukraine and Europe.

“Comprehensive pressure on Russia must continue. Strengthen sanctions against Russia, don’t weaken Ukraine. I thank everyone who supports us,”

the president added.

These statements underscore Zelensky’s insistence on preserving and escalating economic restrictions on Russian business as a critical strategy to halt aggression and bolster Ukraine’s economy.
