Zelenskyy Urges Allies to Speed Up Air Defense Deliveries Following Major Russian Barrage
An Urgent Call for Air Defense Systems
According to Главком: Following a massive Russian missile and drone assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued an urgent appeal to accelerate the delivery of air defense systems. Ukraine's Defense Minister, attending the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting (the Ramstein format), has been tasked with securing PAC-3 missiles for Patriot systems to counter these threats.
In the early hours of February 12, Russian forces launched a complex attack involving:
- 219 attack drones
- 25 missiles, including 24 ballistic missiles
The primary targets were energy facilities in Kyiv, Odesa, and Dnipro. The assault resulted in two civilian deaths and ten injuries, with damage reported in the Kharkiv, Donetsk, Kyiv, and Kherson regions. In Kramatorsk, a drone struck a building belonging to the State Emergency Service.
Ukraine's Recovery and Ongoing Needs
President Zelenskyy reported that recovery efforts are underway in Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and other affected regions. He emphasized that this latest large-scale strike on the energy grid demonstrates Russia's continued aggression and its capacity to deploy significant numbers of ballistic missiles and drones. While a substantial portion of the incoming threats were intercepted, the situation remains critical, particularly in the capital where many homes are without heating. The Ramstein meetings are a crucial forum where Ukraine coordinates military aid with over 50 allied nations.
“Expediting the delivery of air defense systems is a critical task not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe.”
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy further stressed the vital importance of sustained Western support, arguing that Russian missiles and drones not only worsen the humanitarian situation but also undermine diplomatic efforts for a just peace.
This attack underscores Russia's escalating aggression and its use of modern technology to target Ukraine's critical infrastructure. Given the severe consequences for civilians and the economy, the need for advanced air defense has never been more pressing. Support from Western allies, particularly in the form of modern weaponry, is essential for Ukraine's ability to defend its territory and population from future assaults.
