Deepening Defense Ties with Japan

According to Главком: In an interview with Japan's Kyodo News, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed a strong desire to significantly expand defense cooperation with Japan. He proposed a partnership for joint weapons manufacturing and a mutual exchange of military technologies, while also extending an invitation for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to visit Ukraine. Zelenskyy noted that while the two governments already coordinate well on energy and humanitarian issues, he believes a defense partnership could open a new and historic chapter in bilateral relations. This move comes as Ukraine seeks to bolster its long-term defensive capabilities and diversify its international support base.

President Zelenskyy highlighted that Japan possesses licenses and domestic production capabilities for missiles and air defense systems capable of countering ballistic threats. In return, he expressed Ukraine's readiness to share its own battlefield-tested technologies, including:

  • naval drones for coastal defense;
  • cybersecurity solutions;
  • interceptor drones;
  • expertise in managing energy and critical infrastructure during crises.

Zelenskyy pointed out that despite having no navy of its own, Ukraine has successfully damaged part of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea using its maritime drones.

A Meeting with Japan's Prime Minister

The Ukrainian president also conveyed his wish to meet with Prime Minister Kishida in any format, whether at major international gatherings or summits. However, he stressed that a direct, in-person conversation would be far more beneficial for advancing bilateral ties. Zelenskyy affirmed his readiness to travel to Japan, mentioning he had previously visited the country and valued that experience.

Overall, Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the critical importance of developing defense collaboration between Ukraine and Japan, alongside continued cooperation in energy and humanitarian fields. This initiative underscores Ukraine's drive to strengthen its defenses amid ongoing Russian aggression and reflects a broader trend of international security partnerships evolving in response to global conflicts. For Japan, traditionally cautious in defense exports, such cooperation represents a potential strategic shift.
