The new commemoration underscores how essential secure communications and cyber defense have become in modern warfare. At the meeting, he handed out state decorations and thanked them for the vital role communications play on the frontline. Zelensky said that signal soldiers have helped repel thousands of enemy cyberattacks since Russia's full-scale invasion and are central to maintaining battlefield communications.

The holiday was created by a presidential decree issued on August 6. In previous years, August 8 was observed in Ukraine as Day of Signal Troops. While presenting awards, Zelensky underlined that every combat unit depends on communications:

“Communications come first at the front. Absolutely everyone needs them - whether you are in the air assault forces, the marines, the infantry, taking part in a counteroffensive, or holding the line and protecting some important state asset. Your presence is always required, and your steady presence is extremely important.” - Volodymyr Zelensky

Those honored included soldiers who keep combat units connected, have destroyed enemy FPV drones, and strengthen the Ukrainian military's cyber capabilities. Their awards included:

• Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, 3rd class,
• Order For Courage, 3rd class,
• Order of Danylo Halytskyi,
• Medal For Military Service to Ukraine,
• Medal For Impeccable Service, 3rd class, and the Defender of the Fatherland Medal.
