Ukraine Extends State of Emergency and Mobilization Until January 29, 2027
Extension of Martial Law and Mobilization in Ukraine
According to Рубрика — Політика: On October 26, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approved a 90-day extension of martial law and general mobilization, prolonging these measures until January 29, 2027. The renewed period of martial law will commence on October 31, 2026. This decision followed a parliamentary vote in the Verkhovna Rada, where 293 deputies supported extending martial law and 281 backed the continuation of mobilization.
Martial law was initially declared in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, in response to the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation. This legal framework grants state authorities, military command, regional administrations, and local governments expanded powers to counter ongoing threats. Restrictions during martial law can include limitations on the movement of citizens, foreigners, stateless persons, and vehicles. Additionally, compulsory labor service, mandatory public work, and forced requisition of private property may be implemented.
Under martial law, the authorities, including the Verkhovna Rada, government, courts, and ombudsman offices, must continue their functions uninterrupted. Constitutional amendments and elections are prohibited during this period. Public assemblies such as peaceful gatherings, protests, marches, and demonstrations can also be banned to maintain order and security.
General Mobilization and Its Impact
General mobilization serves as an urgent nationwide process to reinforce the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It targets Ukrainian citizens aged 18 to 60, primarily men, who are subject to conscription. Those without prior military service receive specialized training at designated training centers. Previous legislative acts extending martial law and mobilization were passed on July 24, 2026, registered under numbers №16183 and №16182.
"The implementation of the President’s decree extending martial law will enable the necessary measures to counter armed aggression and safeguard the nation's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity."
Igor Klymenko, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine
The extension of martial law and mobilization highlights the ongoing nature of the conflict with Russia and the crucial need to maintain Ukraine’s defense capabilities. These steps continue to support the country’s military efforts amid aggression and contribute to national stability. Government actions in this area also demonstrate Ukraine’s preparedness to face future external threats, which may influence domestic politics and social dynamics.
