Ukraine’s President Meets with Norway’s King Haakon VIII

According to Рубрика — Політика: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the Royal Palace in Oslo to hold talks with King Haakon VIII. This marked the first official meeting since Haakon VIII ascended to the throne on August 28, 2026. Their discussions focused on Norway’s ongoing support for Ukraine, efforts to repatriate Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, the humanitarian situation in the city of Oleshky, and the continuation of international negotiations aimed at ending the war with Russia.

Zelensky expressed his gratitude to King Haakon, the Norwegian government, and its citizens for their steadfast assistance over nearly five years. He highlighted that

"Norway’s total aid to Ukraine has reached $22.5 billion"

and stressed the importance of recovering and reintegrating Ukrainian children taken by Russia, noting that

"2689 children have been successfully returned through the combined efforts of Ukraine and international partners"

. The president acknowledged Norway’s vital role in these humanitarian efforts and emphasized hopes for continued support.

Engaging with International Partners

The President also updated the king on Ukraine’s ongoing initiatives to assist residents of Oleshky and the development of appropriate measures. Following the royal meeting, Zelensky is scheduled to participate in talks with representatives from the United States and European allies. The October 20, 2026 negotiations in Oslo will include:

  • U.S. Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff,
  • Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre,
  • Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

Delegates from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Poland will also join, alongside the head of cabinet for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Deputy Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

Earlier, on October 17, 2026, Zelensky mentioned during an online press briefing the possibility of organizing a U.S.-involved negotiation meeting in a European country. This demonstrates Ukraine’s proactive engagement of global partners to seek a resolution to the conflict with Russia.

The dialogue between President Zelensky and King Haakon VIII plays a crucial role in reinforcing international backing for Ukraine amid the ongoing war. Norway remains a key ally, providing substantial support that underscores the importance of global solidarity in addressing the humanitarian and political challenges facing Ukraine. The upcoming multilateral talks highlight Ukraine’s commitment to pursuing a peaceful solution with broad international involvement.

As Zelensky continues to strengthen Ukraine's international alliances, his upcoming discussions with EU and US leaders will be crucial for securing further financial support and enhancing security measures for Ukraine. These negotiations will address critical issues surrounding aid and the ongoing conflict with Russia.
