Ukrainian president holds high-level talks in Turkish capital

According to Главком: During a diplomatic visit to Ankara on July 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held separate meetings with European Council President António Costa, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The discussions centered on Ukraine's path to European Union membership, strengthening air defense capabilities, and deepening defense cooperation.

In his meeting with Costa, Zelensky expressed gratitude for EU support regarding Ukraine's accession process. The two leaders talked about opening five negotiation clusters to accelerate Ukraine's integration into European institutions. Zelensky's trip to Ankara also included plans for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Key topics on the negotiating table

During the meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the main points of discussion were:

  • bolstering air defense systems;
  • missile supplies;
  • joint weapons production;
  • expanding defense cooperation between Ukraine and NATO.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also met with Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara. According to the Ukrainian presidential office,

“the presidents also discussed a potential timeline for the next steps, which Ukraine and the Ukrainian people have fully earned.”

This series of meetings highlights Ukraine's intensified diplomatic efforts to advance its Euro-Atlantic integration and security partnerships. With growing threats on multiple fronts, discussions on EU accession and NATO backing are critical for strengthening Ukraine's international standing.
