Ukrainian President's Statement

According to ХВИЛЯ: In a Telegram post on March 22, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused former U.S. President Donald Trump of prolonging the war in Ukraine by weakening sanctions against Russia. Zelenskyy argued that revenues from Russian oil give Russia a 'sense of impunity and the ability to continue the war.' He stressed that

"tankers funding the war budget can and must be stopped and blocked, not just let go."

This criticism highlights the high stakes of Western energy policy for Ukraine's survival.

Military Actions and International Relations

Military data indicates a significant escalation, with Russian forces launching nearly 1,500 attack drones, over 1,260 guided aerial bombs, and two missiles at Ukraine over the past week. This surge in aggression coincides with the perceived softening of international sanctions pressure.

The United States has authorized the delivery and sale of Russian oil loaded onto tankers by March 12, 2026, a move that has caused alarm in Kyiv. Furthermore, the U.S. Treasury Department has removed several Russian individuals and entities from sanctions lists, potentially easing financial pressure on Moscow.

Amid these developments, a Ukrainian delegation met in Washington with American representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Additionally, Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov held talks with Trump's advisors in Florida. These meetings underscore Ukraine's urgent efforts to secure sustained international backing against the Russian threat.

Zelenskyy's accusation reflects Kyiv's profound concern that current international policies are undermining its war effort. The U.S.-led relaxation of sanctions is viewed with anxiety, as it could provide Moscow with additional resources to sustain its military campaign. Continued cooperation between Ukrainian and American officials remains critical for supporting Ukraine's defense and countering Russian aggression.

Amid ongoing tensions, recent discussions between Trump and Zelenskyy shed light on potential paths to peace in the conflict. Their conversation in July 2024 aimed to explore avenues for ending hostilities, which may influence both diplomatic efforts and military strategies moving forward.
