Ukraine's Women's Handball Team Achieves Milestone

According to Главком: Ukraine's women's handball team has secured a spot at the 2026 European Championship, a significant achievement that came despite a loss to Serbia in their final qualifying match. The match, part of the second qualification round, ended 30:21 in Serbia's favor. Ukraine's path to qualification was complex; they needed either to beat Serbia by a margin of more than 11 goals or to rely on ranking among the best third-placed teams across the groups. This qualification is a notable success for Ukrainian handball, which continues to develop despite the immense challenges faced by the nation's athletes.

Ukraine finished third in their group with 4 points, which was enough to rank them as one of the four best third-placed teams. The final group standings for the Euro 2026 qualifiers were as follows:

  • 1. Sweden - 12 points, +67 (goal difference);
  • 2. Serbia - 8 points, +23;
  • 3. Ukraine - 4 points, -37;
  • 4. Lithuania - 0 points, -55.

The Women's Handball Euro 2026 tournament is scheduled to take place from December 20 to 26, 2026.

Performance at the Winter Olympics

In a separate sporting event, the Ukrainian national team concluded its participation at the 2026 Winter Olympics without winning a medal, although its athletes finished in the top ten on eight occasions. Notable performances included a sixth-place finish in the mixed team freestyle skiing and ski aerials event, as well as in luge. Other achievements were:

  • Seventh place in women's doubles luge;
  • Eighth place in the biathlon mixed relay;
  • Ninth place in the biathlon relay;
  • Tenth place in freestyle skiing and biathlon.

Qualifying for Euro 2026 highlights the gradual growth of handball in Ukraine and could boost interest in the sport and its youth programs. Meanwhile, the Olympic results show that Ukrainian athletes remain competitive on the world stage, though further improvement is needed to reach the podium. Both outcomes underscore the importance of sustained support for Ukrainian sports during a difficult period.

While the women's handball team celebrates its qualification for Euro 2026, the men's squad faced disappointment, as they were unable to secure a spot for the 2027 World Championship after a defeat to Slovakia. This contrast in fortunes highlights the varying trajectories of Ukraine's handball teams, emphasizing the challenges and achievements within the sport.
