Olenka the Snake Now Lives at a Volunteer Office

According to Главком: At the Halychyna Civic Initiative office in Ivano-Frankivsk, a corn snake named Olenka has become an unexpected resident-a gift from Ukrainian soldiers. This reptile spent two years on the frontlines, living alongside troops in active combat zones. She was discovered inside a washing machine in a five-story building in Kharkiv shortly after the full-scale war began. Olenka has now been living at the volunteer office for ten months.

Olenka’s Needs and Symbolic Role

Lesia Kachurova, the organization’s head, humorously describes the snake as a combat veteran:

“She’s our combat participant-that’s how we joke. The snake spent two years at the front, fighting. The tip of her tail is slightly broken, but we don’t know where she got that injury.” - Lesia Kachurova

Olenka is non-venomous and has never bitten anyone during her time with the organization. Her diet consists solely of mice, eating one every two weeks. Volunteers purchase frozen mice from specialized suppliers.

Kachurova also shared details about the snake’s needs:

“She’s growing, and her size depends on how often she’s fed. If we feed her more often, she’ll get bigger. But the problem now is that her current container is too small-we’re looking for something larger. She’s gotten longer, and we’re making sure Olenka is comfortable here.” - Lesia Kachurova

The volunteers have no plans to find Olenka a new home or release her into the wild. “No, Olenka is not being given away. She’s a member of our volunteer family-how could we give her away?” Kachurova emphasized, adding that they would welcome donations such as a terrarium.

Olenka has become a symbol of resilience and support, as her story reflects both the hardships faced by soldiers and the compassion of volunteers caring for animals during this difficult period. Source: Hlavkom, citing a report by Suspilne.

This story underscores the importance of supporting not only people but also animals affected by the war. Olenka has witnessed combat and now stands as a symbol of hope that volunteers strive to bring to those who suffer. Initiatives like this help create safe spaces for animals that have lost their homes, serving as a testament to humanity in times of crisis.
