He left behind his phone, glasses, and smartwatch but took his wallet, hiking boots, and a .38 caliber revolver. His wife, Susan, reported him missing around noon that day. Police issued an urgent bulletin for his location, citing unspecified health concerns. The case has drawn significant federal attention due to McCasland's high-level military background.

Intensive Search Efforts and Potential Connections

The search involves the FBI, drones, helicopters, and K-9 units. A gray Air Force sweatshirt was found a mile from his home, though its connection to McCasland is unconfirmed and no blood was detected. McCasland held senior Pentagon positions, including command of the Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. After retiring, he worked with the company To The Stars, which researches unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP). His disappearance occurred just days after former President Donald Trump directed the Pentagon to declassify documents related to UAPs.

His wife confirmed he had brief connections with the UAP research community but dismissed rumors he suffers from dementia. She stated,

"This connection is not a reason for Neil to be abducted. He does not possess any special knowledge about alien bodies or debris from Roswell supposedly stored at the base,"
