Жовтень — місяць підвищення обізнаності про рак молочної залози: українські чоловіки підтримують ініціативу Kesher.

October Dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Worldwide, October serves as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of early detection and raise public consciousness about the disease. In Ukraine, the national non-profit organization Kesher Project actively participates each year, and in 2023, it has enlisted prominent Ukrainian male influencers as ambassadors to promote women’s health and breast cancer prevention. Across 13 Ukrainian cities, Kesher Project is hosting a series of events to support this vital campaign.

According to data from the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, breast cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women globally. Each year, approximately 2.4 million new cases are identified worldwide, resulting in nearly 694,000 deaths. In Ukraine alone, 12,683 breast cancer cases were registered in 2023, with 12,582 affecting women and 101 men. Tragically, the disease claimed 3,553 lives in the country during the same year.

Kesher Project’s Initiatives

One of Kesher Project’s key campaigns, #1MINUTEOFCARE, encourages men to use social media platforms to motivate women to prioritize their health. The campaign’s ambassadors include well-known figures such as Timur Miroshnychenko, Ihor Donskykh, Andriy Cherepushchak (known as Halytska Diva), Nazar Tumanik, and other male influencers.

“For over two decades, Kesher Project has worked tirelessly to ensure women have access to reliable health information and can make informed decisions about their wellbeing. However, raising awareness is only part of the challenge. It is equally crucial to change societal attitudes-breaking the silence and stigma that still surround this topic.” - Vlada Nedak, CEO of Kesher Project

In addition to individual advocates, Ukrainian businesses have come together to support fundraising efforts benefiting women who have faced breast cancer during October’s awareness activities. With more than 20 years of experience in women’s health education and breast cancer prevention, Kesher Project has evolved its approach over time, incorporating educational materials, medical consultations, free screenings, online initiatives, personal narratives, and influencer-led campaigns.

This campaign draws critical attention to women’s health issues, emphasizing that early breast cancer diagnosis can be lifesaving. Campaigns like Pink October play a significant role in shaping social norms and enhancing public understanding of women’s health concerns.

Engaging men in conversations about breast cancer helps shift cultural perceptions around prevention and treatment, fostering broader community support for affected women. These efforts also encourage new forms of social interaction that promote a more conscious and proactive approach to health overall.

As the fight against breast cancer continues, various initiatives are being launched to enhance awareness and prevention strategies. For instance, the recent month-long campaign in Kiev aims to further educate the public on the importance of early detection and support for those affected. These collective efforts underscore the urgent need for comprehensive health education and community engagement in the battle against this pervasive disease.
