Yellow Weather Alert Issued for Kyiv and the Kyiv Region

According to Главком: A yellow-level weather warning has been declared for Kyiv and the surrounding region on February 9th due to hazardous icy conditions on roads. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with some areas possibly seeing light snowfall. This week, Ukraine remains under the influence of an Arctic air mass, which is bringing the coldest temperatures of the season in early February. Such alerts are common in the region during winter, signaling conditions that require public caution.

Weather Forecast for February 9th

On February 9th, Ukraine will experience cloudy weather with occasional clear spells and no widespread precipitation. In the Kyiv region, nighttime temperatures will range from -13°C to -18°C (9°F to 0°F), while daytime highs will be between -7°C and -12°C (19°F to 10°F). In the capital itself, the mercury will drop to -14°C to -16°C (7°F to 3°F) at night and reach -8°C to -10°C (18°F to 14°F) during the day. A northerly wind of 5-10 m/s (11-22 mph) is forecast.

In the Carpathian region, southern, and southeastern parts of the country, nighttime lows will fall to -9°C to -14°C (16°F to 7°F), with daytime temperatures of -3°C to -8°C (27°F to 18°F). Zakarpattia will see milder conditions, with temperatures around 0°C (32°F) at night and rising to 1°C to 6°C (34°F to 43°F) in the afternoon. Meteorologists also note that any snowfall will be mostly light and localized.

The coming night will see temperatures as low as -18°C (0°F) in Ukraine, and the next night could bring -20°C to -22°C (-4°F to -8°F)! I don't even want to write more. As for precipitation, nothing special-an anticyclone is in place. Temperatures will be slightly higher in the south and southwest, around -12°C (10°F) at night.

Consequently, the yellow alert in Kyiv serves as a warning for residents to exercise extreme caution on roads due to the ice.

These conditions are likely to significantly impact road traffic, especially given the widespread ice. Drivers are strongly advised to be vigilant, reduce speed, and avoid sudden maneuvers. The hazardous weather may also cause delays in public transport, so passengers should plan their journeys with potential disruptions in mind.
