Ukrainian Forces Regain Tactical Momentum and Liberate New Territory
Ukraine’s Defense Forces Reclaim Tactical Initiative
According to Главком: Ukraine’s military has regained the tactical initiative along the front line, a shift driven by successful counteroffensives and mounting Russian losses. Since November 2025, Ukrainian troops have liberated a substantial portion of Kupiansk in Kharkiv Oblast, and during the winter and spring of 2026, they reclaimed over 400 square kilometers in southern Ukraine. Starting in late April 2026, several settlements in western Zaporizhzhia Oblast were also freed. These operations have dealt serious operational and strategic blows to Russia’s spring-summer offensive in Donbas.
Frontline Situation Analysis
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian forces are likely to expand their medium-range strike campaign further and continue launching counterattacks at vulnerable points along the front line. Analysts note that these actions could increasingly disrupt Russian offensive operations. Russia’s ability to conduct offensives has been undermined by intensified Ukrainian strikes on its logistics, military equipment, and personnel.
Currently, the number of Ukrainian offensive actions has surpassed those carried out by Russian forces. In May alone, the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Unmanned Systems Command aims to inflict 34,000 casualties on Russia. In response, Russian planners are eyeing Belarus and Russia’s Bryansk Oblast as potential launchpads for additional attacks on Ukraine, prompting Kyiv to bolster defenses in those areas.
Overall, Ukraine’s military has achieved its greatest frontline successes since the Kursk operation in August 2024. The situation remains fluid, presenting new challenges and opportunities for both sides. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi has stated that further actions by Ukrainian forces could significantly alter the course of the conflict.
“The restoration of tactical initiative by Ukrainian forces marks a critical phase in the conflict, as it has the potential to shift the strategic balance on the front line.”
Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Increased pressure on Russian troops and improvements to defensive positions demonstrate Ukraine’s readiness to continue fighting for its territorial integrity. Monitoring the next moves of both sides will be essential for forecasting how the situation in the region evolves.
As Ukrainian forces continue to gain ground, their operational reach has expanded significantly, allowing them to target Russian assets even beyond the immediate conflict zones. This escalation in Ukrainian military capabilities underscores the importance of understanding the broader implications of their recent strikes, including those that have reached as far as the Caspian Sea.
