Detainment of Ukrainian Media Professionals in Vienna

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: In Vienna, journalist Mykhailo Tkach and cameraman Yaroslav Bondarenko were apprehended while working on an editorial assignment. The incident occurred roughly 3 to 5 kilometers from the city center when seven masked, armed individuals approached their vehicle. The assailants smashed the car windows, pointed guns at them, forcibly pulled Tkach and Bondarenko out of the car, placed them face down on the road, searched them, and bound their hands with tape.

Tkach recounted that at the moment of detention, he did not see any official identification from the masked individuals and did not realize they were police officers. He believed they were being abducted and remained in shock for 30 to 40 minutes. After police vehicles arrived, he was placed in a separate compartment of a van and transported for about 20 minutes with sirens blaring. Upon reaching the police station, Tkach was held in solitary confinement for nearly two hours without any explanation.

During this time, a doctor checked on his health. Later, Tkach was moved to another room where he was ordered to strip, had his clothes confiscated, and then returned for measurements of his weight and height.

He was asked to sign a document in German but refused due to language barriers. Subsequently, Tkach was brought before two individuals he assumed were investigators. It was revealed that both Tkach and Bondarenko faced three charges: espionage on behalf of Ukrainian military intelligence, involvement in a criminal organization, and causing harm to Austria. No evidence was provided during the interrogation to support these accusations.

Official Austrian Response and Media Community’s Reaction

On October 9, Austrian authorities confirmed Tkach’s release. Meanwhile, Georgiy Tykhyy, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Ukrainian diplomats and consular officials in Austria actively worked to resolve the matter. Sevhil Musayeva, editor-in-chief of 'Ukrainska Pravda,' reported that Bondarenko was injured and hospitalized, and that his interrogation began during the night.

From my perspective, we were treated like terrorists-there was no communication at all, only yelling and guns pointed at us. It was a complete shock.
