According to Главком: On the morning of June 19, militants launched an attack on Diori Hamani International Airport in Niger's capital, Niamey, resulting in 35 fatalities. The assault was confirmed by Niger's Ministry of Defense. As the country's largest airport, Diori Hamani serves as a critical transportation hub for the region.

Among those killed:

  • 11 military personnel
  • 2 civilians
  • 22 attackers

Four militants were wounded during the response operation. Authorities have detained around twenty individuals on suspicion of involvement in the attack. The group Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate active in West Africa, has claimed responsibility for the assault.

Rising Violence Across the Region

This incident underscores an alarming escalation of violence in the area, where extremist organizations continue to target both civilian and military sites. Niger's security situation remains deeply concerning, as the country grapples with multiple threats to its stability.

The attack on Diori Hamani Airport highlights the growing terrorism risk in West Africa, where groups like JNIM have intensified their operations in recent years. This poses a significant danger not only to Niger but also to neighboring nations, which could face similar strikes.

In response to these challenges, Niger's government is working to bolster its defense capabilities and strengthen partnerships with international allies to restore regional security.
