Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry Issues Statement on Nuclear Security

According to МЗС: Forty-seven member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), together with the European Union, have jointly condemned Russia’s attack on the Central Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility located near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The joint statement identifies Russian aggression as the root cause of current nuclear safety risks and calls on Moscow to halt all strikes against Ukrainian nuclear sites. The attack damaged facilities used by IAEA experts, underscoring the urgent need to protect nuclear infrastructure in conflict zones.

The statement reinforces key principles outlined in IAEA Board of Governors and General Conference resolutions, which establish fundamental guidelines for maintaining nuclear security. By aligning with these international frameworks, the signatories emphasize that safeguarding nuclear facilities and critical infrastructure in Ukraine is a shared global responsibility.

International Solidarity and Support

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has expressed gratitude to the nations backing the declaration, highlighting the crucial role of international unity in countering threats to nuclear safety. This collective stance marks a significant step in strengthening Ukraine’s position on the global stage amid ongoing aggression.

The joint statement from IAEA member states and the EU reflects widespread international alarm over nuclear security in Ukraine, a concern amplified by the realities of armed conflict. Such multilateral support can serve as a key factor in promoting regional stability and averting potential disasters. At the same time, these declarations underscore the necessity of continuous monitoring and strict adherence to international safety standards.

In light of the recent condemnation by the IAEA, it is crucial to understand the broader context of nuclear security in Ukraine. The ongoing conflict has raised significant concerns, as highlighted by Ukraine's response to Russia's misleading claims regarding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant. This underscores the importance of international vigilance and cooperation in ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities amidst escalating tensions.
