AI-Generated Intimate Deepfakes Impact 7% of Adults in the US, UK, and Australia
Study Uncovers Widespread Impact of Deepfake Abuse
According to НВ — Техно: A comprehensive international survey led by RMIT University and supported by Google has revealed that approximately 7% of adults across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia have been targeted by intimate deepfake images created using artificial intelligence without their consent. Surveying over 7,200 participants, the research highlights the profound risks deepfake technology poses not only to public figures but also to ordinary individuals, affecting their mental health, careers, finances, and personal relationships.
The findings show that one in every fifteen adults reported unauthorized manipulations of their images since reaching adulthood. Among those affected, nearly 87% experienced adverse consequences in various areas of their lives. The groups most vulnerable to such abuses include:
- young people under 35 years old;
- men;
- racial minorities;
- individuals with disabilities.
Notably, men reported incidents of abuse at more than twice the rate of women, with 10.2% compared to 3.8%.
Urgent Call for Legal Reforms and Platform Safeguards
Previous surveys have indicated that 3.2% of respondents encountered explicit sexual content generated by AI, while about 20% admitted to intentionally viewing AI-created media involving real people. Project leader Nicola Henry stresses the critical need for stronger legislation alongside mandatory verification tools on online platforms. She stated:
“Passing new laws to protect users alone is insufficient. It's essential to implement compulsory verification mechanisms on digital platforms and incorporate protective features during AI development to prevent violations before they occur.”
The study raises important ethical questions about AI use and underscores the pressing demand for regulatory frameworks. Addressing deepfake abuse and its damaging effects on individuals’ private lives requires immediate legislative action and technological safeguards to ensure online user safety. As AI technology evolves rapidly, proactive measures are vital-not only to respond to current challenges but also to stop future abuses before they happen.
As the implications of deepfake technology continue to unfold, it's crucial to examine how such manipulations can alter perceptions and influence decision-making processes. Insights from a related study on AI's impact on memory and political choices further emphasize the urgency for effective measures to combat these challenges. Understanding the broader effects of AI-generated content can help in formulating comprehensive strategies to protect individuals from its misuse.
