Temporary Shutdown of Omirou Airport on Chios Island

According to УНІАН — Туризм: The Greek island of Chios will see its Omirou Airport suspended for four months due to an extensive runway renovation project. This closure is set to begin on November 15, 2026, and will last until March 15, 2027. The upgrade aims to support uninterrupted air traffic for the 2027 tourist season and improve conditions for winter flights.

Once the modernization is complete, the runway will measure 1799 meters in length. During the closure, emergency flights will be operated by helicopters landing and taking off from the parking apron. Chios is Greece's fifth-largest island, located in the northern Aegean Sea.

Economic Concerns and Local Reactions

The decision to halt airport operations has sparked criticism regarding its economic impact. Initially, the government had planned a two-month closure starting January 15, but extending it to four months has caused significant public unrest.

“The premature shutdown will severely affect the island’s economy and community, especially during the holiday season (Christmas, New Year), a time when travel, family visits, and medical appointments are common.” - Pantelis Legatos

As a border island just five miles from Turkey, Chios heavily relies on air connectivity with the Greek mainland for healthcare, leisure, and mobility.

Additionally, it’s important to note that Lake Koroneia in northern Greece has dramatically shrunk over recent years. Its surface area has declined from 34.4 square kilometers in 2016 to only 2.7 square kilometers in 2024, primarily due to decreased rainfall and rising temperatures. A decade ago, Lake Koroneia was Greece’s fifth-largest lake and a protected wetland area.

The suspension of Omirou Airport’s operations has raised concerns among residents and business owners alike, as it threatens to reduce tourist arrivals during a crucial period. This disruption could impose economic challenges on an island dependent on air travel. Nevertheless, the planned runway improvements are expected to enhance flight safety and efficiency, potentially boosting tourism growth once the project is completed.
