American Entrepreneur Acquires Abandoned Spanish Village to Launch Tourism and Residential Development

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Jason Lee Beckwith, an American entrepreneur, has purchased the deserted village of Salto de Castro in Spain’s Zamora province for €310,000, aiming to transform it into a combined tourist and residential destination. The Spanish government has officially approved this ambitious project, with restoration costs potentially reaching €6 million. Originally established in 1946 by the Iberdrola company to house hydroelectric plant workers, the village was abandoned in 1989 after residents left and the local Civil Guard post was closed.

Salto de Castro has changed hands several times in recent decades: a private buyer acquired it in 2000, and in 2022, an entrepreneur from Toledo purchased it for €300,000 but abandoned restoration plans. Now, Beckwith intends to renovate key village structures including:

• 44 residential houses
• The local school
• The church
• The village bar
• The Civil Guard barracks

The initial phase of redevelopment will focus on creating hotel accommodations, a restaurant, a reception area, a swimming pool, and leisure zones equipped with barbecue facilities.

Beckwith is actively seeking international investors and hopes to secure funding from both the Spanish government and the European Union to support the project. While local authorities have expressed strong backing for the plan, environmentalists have raised concerns about potential impacts on the nearby Arribes del Duero Natural Park, a UNESCO-recognized site and part of the Natura 2000 network. Spain has a history of selling rural land at symbolic prices to combat depopulation in remote areas, providing important context for this initiative.

“We have just taken a monumental step forward,” Beckwith remarked, highlighting the significance of this project for revitalizing the village.

The rehabilitation of Salto de Castro could mark a vital turning point for this region, which has undergone profound changes over recent decades.
