Born on June 15, 1941, in the village of Chortoria (now part of the Vyzhnytsia district in Chernivtsi Oblast, Ukraine), he was posthumously awarded the Taras Shevchenko State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR in 1988. Growing up in a large peasant family, Mykolaichuk completed his secondary education at a school in the village of Brusnytsia, also in present-day Vyzhnytsia district. As a young man, he performed in a local amateur theater, where his acting talent first emerged. At just 17, he wrote his first screenplay, titled "The Living Cross in the Dead Oak Grove." After graduating from the Chernivtsi Music College in 1957 with a degree in choral conducting for amateur arts, he went on to finish his training in 1961 at the theater studio attached to the Chernivtsi Music and Drama Theater.
