Prisoner Swap Between Ukraine and Russia
A prisoner exchange between Ukraine and the Russian Federation took place on April 24, resulting in the return of 193 Ukrainian service members. This update was shared by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, as reported by Glavkom. Those freed include personnel from:
- the Armed Forces
- the National Guard
- the State Border Guard Service
- the National Police
- the State Special Transport Service
Among the released individuals are also those facing criminal charges fabricated by Russia, as well as wounded soldiers.
Previous Exchanges and the Significance of the Process
Earlier, on April 12, another major prisoner swap took place, during which a large group of Ukrainians was freed from Russian captivity. That exchange included both military personnel and civilians, most of whom had been held since 2022. The group released on April 12 consisted of:
- members of the National Guard
- the State Border Guard Service
- the Armed Forces
- Territorial Defense forces
- airborne assault units
- motorized infantry units
- mechanized troops
Among those freed were 28 officers who had also been in captivity since 2022. The oldest among them is 63 years old, while the youngest is 21.
'It is crucial that exchanges are happening and that our people are coming home. I thank everyone working to make these swaps possible. I am grateful to every unit on the front line that helps replenish Ukraine's exchange fund. I also thank all partners who assist in this effort. We remember each and every one, and we continue working every day to bring our people back from Russian captivity.'
- Volodymyr Zelensky
The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War has also confirmed that 12 additional Ukrainians, previously unaccounted for, are now known to be in captivity.
Prisoner exchanges remain a key component of Ukraine's humanitarian strategy during its conflict with Russia. The return of Ukrainian military and civilian personnel from captivity not only boosts national morale but also underscores the state's commitment to protecting its citizens' rights. Negotiations for the release of other captives are ongoing, reflecting the sustained focus of Ukrainian authorities and society on this critical issue.
The recent exchange of 193 Ukrainian soldiers highlights the ongoing efforts to bring home those captured during the conflict. This significant event follows a prior swap that saw 40 personnel from the Interior Ministry return, underscoring the continuous commitment to securing the release of all Ukrainian detainees.
