Kyiv Mourns Two Lives Lost
A 30-year-old woman, Daria Honchar, and her mother have succumbed to injuries they suffered during a Russian attack on the night of June 2 in Kyiv. The two were caught in a combined assault by Russian forces as they rushed to reach a shelter but failed to make it in time. Both sustained severe wounds and were hospitalized in intensive care, where they fought for their lives before ultimately passing away.
A funeral service for Daria Honchar and her mother will be held on June 24 at 3:00 PM at Baikove Cemetery. The same attack also claimed the lives of two other individuals: Iryna Zabudko, a student at the Mykhailo Drahomanov Ukrainian State University, and a Kyiv resident named Veronika Chuian. Veronika Chuian was fatally struck by a rocket explosion while heading to a shelter in an underground parking garage with her young sons.
Aftermath of the Assault
The attack damaged five medical facilities and eleven educational institutions. One eyewitness recalled,
“On May 17, we saw Dasha at our ethno-festival Vidnaydeni, and two weeks later, on June 2, she and her mother were caught in a massive Russian assault on the capital. They were running to a shelter but didn't make it... With critical injuries, they ended up in intensive care and fought for their lives the entire time.”
It is worth noting that on the night of June 2, Russian forces launched a coordinated attack on Kyiv.
This tragedy highlights the constant danger civilians face in Ukraine amid ongoing hostilities, as well as the severe impact on essential infrastructure. The relentless shelling results in civilian casualties and damages critical facilities, complicating access to healthcare and education.
