5G Pilot Project Launches in Borodianka
A pilot project to test 5G communication technology commenced in Borodianka, Kyiv region, on January 28. This initiative, which will run at least until December 2026, makes Borodianka the second location in Ukraine, after Lviv, to host operational 5G base stations. The rollout of 5G is a key component of modern digital infrastructure, crucial for economic recovery and future connectivity.
The pilot launch in Borodianka proceeded after receiving the necessary permits from the Armed Forces of Ukraine. While the Ukrainian government approved a 5G Development Plan back in November 2020, a nationwide commercial launch of the technology is only possible after the termination of martial law in the country.
Planned Project Expansion
Scaling the project is also planned for major cities including:
- Kharkiv
- Kyiv
- Odesa
Oleksiy Kubra, Vice Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine, noted that the Ministry of Development initiated Borodianka's inclusion in the network of settlements for 5G testing, framing it as a vital step in the town's comprehensive restoration.
'This is more than a technological upgrade. We are working on comprehensive restoration, where not just rebuilding takes place, but the quality of life is substantially improved.' - Oleksiy Kubra
Consequently, the implementation of 5G technology in Ukraine continues to gain momentum, particularly within the context of post-war recovery and improving urban quality of life.
The deployment of 5G represents a significant phase in developing Ukraine's digital infrastructure, especially under current recovery conditions. The Borodianka test may serve as a model for other cities aiming to modernize their communication systems. This project underscores government efforts to synchronize technological progress with reconstruction and the enhancement of living standards for its citizens.
