Yuriy Vasilyev's Triumph at the World Championships
At 79 years old, Yuriy Vasilyev, a senior lecturer in the Department of Physical Education at NTU KhPI, achieved outstanding success at the World Kettlebell Championships held in Chișinău, Moldova. He won three gold medals and set a new world record. The competition drew over 500 participants, highlighting its high level of competition.
Vasilyev claimed victories in three events:
- Long cycle (10 minutes)
- Biathlon
- Half marathon
The athlete stepped onto the podium four times: three times after his wins in these events and once after setting the world record. The record was achieved in the DC2 discipline (long cycle with two kettlebells). As Vasilyev noted:
“I set the record in the DC2 discipline, which is the long cycle with two kettlebells.”
In the half marathon, Vasilyev lifted over four tons in 28 minutes, a remarkable feat. He has been involved in kettlebell sports for more than 50 years, starting his training at age 18 after enrolling in the physical education faculty at a pedagogical institute. His first appearance at a World Championship came after he turned 60, and since then, he has consistently delivered impressive results.
Contributing to the Promotion of Sports in Ukraine
Vasilyev funded his own travel to the tournament in Chișinău, demonstrating his deep commitment to the sport. He brought back his tenth world record from Moldova, underscoring his extraordinary achievements in kettlebell sports.
In the context of Ukraine's sporting achievements, it is worth noting that President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a decree on athlete payments. Mykhailo Romanchuk will receive monthly payments of three and a half times the subsistence minimum for able-bodied persons (about 11,600 hryvnias), while Vita Semerenko is eligible for a stipend of four times the subsistence minimum (just over 13,000 hryvnias).
Yuriy Vasilyev continues to inspire the younger generation of athletes with his perseverance and accomplishments, proving that success in sports is possible at any stage of life.
Vasilyev's achievements at the World Kettlebell Championships highlight not only his personal success but also the proud traditions of Ukrainian sports, which continue to motivate new generations of athletes. The successes of athletes like Vasilyev are crucial for promoting an active lifestyle and sports in Ukraine, especially given current challenges.
