July 9 is celebrated as International Disarmament Day and Fashion Day. Believers honor the memory of Saint Pancratius, the Bishop of Taormina.

International Disarmament Day

On July 9, 2001, the UN established International Disarmament Day. This event is associated with the negative consequences of prolonged armed conflicts in countries located in Southeast Europe.

After the resolution of conflicts in this region, there was a significant amount of weaponry that exceeded needs, was illegally held, and used for criminal activities, leading to human casualties.

To prevent the illegal flow of arms, responsible disposal, and safety within the territories of the Balkan states, the member states of the UN signed a Regional Plan to Combat Excessive Stockpiling and Illegal Trafficking of Weapons.

The project was initiated by the UNDP and others, with the main component being the support and financial assistance to the authorities of Southeast European countries for the disposal of excess and confiscated weapons. Over the years of the campaign, almost all countries have held events to reduce the number of weapons with the support of the EU, UNDP, and various NGOs, which provided assistance for the successful implementation of these projects.

Fashion Day

Every year on July 9, we celebrate Fashion Day, a holiday of personal style and individual aesthetics. This day provides everyone the opportunity to showcase their unique attitude towards fashion through clothing and accessories. In modern society, where every individual has a special way to express their style, fashion becomes an integral part of collective identity.

What religious holiday is today

July 9 in the church calendar marks the day of remembrance of Saint Pancratius, Bishop of Taormina. Pancratius' parents were from Antioch. When he learned about the blessing of Jesus Christ, he was baptized in Antioch by the apostles. According to tradition, he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and then led a monastic life in the Pontic mountains. Later, Peter appointed him bishop of Taormina in Sicily. A month later, Pancratius built a city church and converted all the townspeople to Christianity. He met a martyr's death in Taormina at the hands of pagans who stoned him. The relics of Saint Pancratius are kept in the Roman Church of Saint Pancratius. There is also a church bearing his name in Taormina.
