Yaya Touré Takes the Helm at Slovan
Yaya Touré has been named the new head coach of Slovan Bratislava, signing a three-year contract. This marks the first time the 43-year-old former Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder will lead a team as a standalone manager. Previously, Touré served as an assistant coach for the Saudi Arabia national team and Belgian club Standard Liège. He was also part of the coaching staff at Ukrainian side Olimpik Donetsk from February to May 2021.
Slovan’s Current Standing and Serhiy Rebrov’s Situation
Slovan has dominated Slovak football, winning eight consecutive league titles since the 2018/19 season. The club will compete in the Champions League qualifiers next season. The squad includes Ukrainian players Danylo Ihnatenko and Mykola Kukharevych.
Before hiring Touré, the club held talks with former Ukraine national team coach Serhiy Rebrov, who is a leading candidate for the head coach position at Greek club Panathinaikos. Slovan’s president, Ivan Kmotrík, confirmed these discussions. Rebrov, 51, has already met twice with Panathinaikos management and requested a three-year contract worth €2.2 million per season for his coaching staff. He set a deadline for a decision by the end of May. Rebrov also had the option to take over UAE club Al-Wahda.
Notably, Rebrov led the Ukraine national team from June 2023 to April 2026, recording 16 wins, eight draws, and ten losses in 34 matches.
Yaya Touré’s appointment as Slovan’s head coach opens a new chapter in his career and offers fresh opportunities for the club to grow on the international stage.
Touré’s hiring represents a significant step for Slovan, given his experience at top European clubs and his previous coaching roles. It could also benefit the Ukrainian players on the team, who have a chance to improve their skills under his guidance. Meanwhile, the situation with Serhiy Rebrov highlights how clubs are actively pursuing successful coaches, reflecting a strong drive to achieve high-level results internationally.
As Slovan Bratislava embarks on this new journey with Yaya Touré at the helm, the club's previous interest in Sergiy Rebrov as a potential head coach highlights the competitive landscape of coaching in European football. The discussions with Rebrov not only reflect Slovan's ambition but also the strategic decisions that shape their future in international competitions.
