An Updated Palette for the Presidential Fleet
The United States has approved a new color scheme for the presidential aircraft, Air Force One, and other planes used to transport high-ranking officials. The redesign incorporates preferences expressed by former President Donald Trump. The updated Air Force One will feature a red, white, gold, and dark blue palette, a style reminiscent of Trump's personal aircraft. The iconic blue-and-white livery introduced during the Kennedy era is being retired.
Boeing is modifying two 747-8 aircraft to replace the older 747-200 models. A third 747-8i will also be painted in the new colors. In 2018, Donald Trump directed the move away from the traditional design, proposing a white top, dark blue bottom, and a dark red stripe. The visual identity of Air Force One is a powerful symbol of the presidency, making any change a subject of national interest.
Political Symbolism and Practical Challenges
Despite the approved scheme, an Air Force review indicated that the darker colors could increase costs and potentially delay deliveries. In March 2023, President Joe Biden rescinded the previous design decision, but last month Trump reiterated his desire to alter the presidential plane's color palette.
“We want it to be blue, not baby blue. Everything has its time and place. We’re going to change the colors” — Donald Trump.
The approval of the new color scheme demonstrates the lasting influence of a former president on the visual identity of official U.S. aircraft. While the color change may lead to additional expenses and delivery delays, the decision underscores the deep political symbolism attached to presidential transport. Such a redesign can also affect how American power and its aesthetic are perceived on the global stage.
