How Airlines Make Passengers Pay More for Flights

Airlines intentionally make economy class less comfortable to push passengers to buy more expensive premium tickets. Narrow seats and limited legroom are not just space-saving measures, but a strategy to increase revenues. This is mentioned in an article from The Sun.

How Airlines Make Economy Class Uncomfortable

Complaints from travelers about discomfort in economy class are rising: seats are positioned closer together, leaving minimal legroom. But as noted by the editor of an American aviation portal, Seth Miller, this is not a coincidence.

«Airlines are focused on higher revenues that they can obtain from premium-class passengers, and aircraft cabins are transitioning to higher premium configurations, eliminating seats in economy class to achieve this goal», – he explained.

The main profit for carriers does not come from economy passengers, but from those who choose business class, first class, or premium economy.

How Airlines Attract Passengers to Buy Business Class Tickets

To persuade passengers to switch to more expensive categories, airlines offer:

  • Priority check-in and boarding.
  • Extra legroom and adjustable headrests.
  • Increased baggage allowance.
  • Enhanced meals and footrests.

What is Premium Economy Class on Airplanes

For example, American airline Southwest Airlines actively promotes premium economy – basically economy seats with more comfort. However, such convenience comes at a cost: premium economy tickets are 30–100% more expensive than regular economy.

This strategy allows airlines to maximize profits, as passengers who wish to avoid discomfort are willing to pay extra. At the same time, carriers do not increase the number of seats in economy class, as one might assume, but rather reduce them to expand premium areas.
