How Ukraine Thwarted a Major Russian Offensive in 2025: Commander Syrskyi's Analysis

Відзначення стратегічної перемоги: Аналіз командира Сирського про успішну оборону України в 2025 році.

Ukrainian Armed Forces Operations in 2025

Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has detailed how Ukraine successfully disrupted a major Russian offensive operation planned for 2025. According to his account, Ukrainian forces executed operations inside Russian territory and launched a counteroffensive on the Dobropillia axis, compelling the enemy to redeploy its troops. These preemptive actions prevented Russia from realizing its plans to seize significant territories in eastern Ukraine.

Russia's 2025 strategy aimed at a large-scale offensive to capture the entirety of Donbas, along with territories in Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kherson oblasts. The plans also included establishing a buffer zone in Kharkiv and Sumy oblasts. However, the Ukrainian army preempted this by conducting two offensive operations on Russian soil:

  • In March-April within Belgorod Oblast;
  • In May-June within Kursk Oblast.

Syrskyi stated that these maneuvers forced Russian forces to redeploy, derailing their spring campaign plans. This proactive strategy reflects Ukraine's shift to taking the fight to the enemy's territory to disrupt their logistics and morale.

The Dobropillia Axis Counteroffensive

In August 2025, Russian troops began an assault on Dobropillia, attempting to encircle the Pokrovsk-Myrnograd agglomeration. Russia's intent was to launch an offensive toward Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, deploying a marine infantry group. Ukrainian forces, however, initiated their own counteroffensive on the Dobropillia axis, which resulted in the encirclement of forward elements of the Russian 51st Army. To prevent their destruction, Russia was forced to redirect its marine infantry to this sector, where they became bogged down in intense fighting.

Despite claims from Russian command about capturing Kupiansk and Pokrovsk, Oleksandr Syrskyi emphasized that 97% of Kupiansk remains under Ukrainian control. The situation in Pokrovsk is more complex, as the enemy has been attempting to seize the city for nineteen months. Syrskyi noted that Ukrainian forces have managed to retain control of Pokrovsk's northern part and have stabilized the situation to the west.

Thus, according to the Commander-in-Chief, the Ukrainian army's actions on the Russian border and the failure of the Russian army's plans in the southeastern part of the front were key reasons the enemy failed to implement its strategy. By the end of 2025, Russia began sustaining significant losses, losing more soldiers than it could recruit.

These events underscore the importance of Ukraine's strategic counteroffensive operations in countering Russian aggression. The successful actions of Ukrainian forces not only thwarted Russia's plans for a large-scale territorial conquest but also demonstrated Ukraine's capacity to adapt to evolving frontline conditions. In the context of a protracted war, these operational successes have strategic implications, potentially influencing future escalation or negotiations by exposing the mounting pressure on Russia's military command.
