After March 4, 2027, Ukrainians in Germany will no longer have automatic temporary protection. To stay in the country, one will have to switch to another type of residence permit — under general rules. This is reported by VisitUkraine.
Legalization in Germany: Why Status Will Not Be Extended
Germany does not plan a separate status for Ukrainians after the expiration of §24. This means that staying in the country will have to be justified with standard grounds.
Key criteria:
-
employment or stable income
-
education or training
-
family circumstances.
Simple scenarios, like moving to relatives without proper documentation, will not work.
Moving from Other EU Countries: Important to Know
Having status in another EU country does not grant the right to live in Germany. For example, the Polish PESEL UKR allows staying only up to 90 days within Schengen.
To stay long-term, one needs to apply for a new permit specifically in Germany. Additionally, registering the place of residence does not replace the residence permit — first, the status is obtained, and only then the Anmeldung.
Family Reunification: Limited Options
This option is not available to everyone. The law allows reunification only with:
-
spouses
-
children
-
parents (in exceptional cases).
At the same time, it is necessary to prove financial capability, housing availability, and stable income. Practically, only a few can use this route.

Real Ways to Stay After 2027
The most viable options are work or education.
Among the employment options:
-
standard work permits (§18a, §18b)
-
vocational training.
For this, a contract, verified qualifications, and language knowledge are required.
Education also provides a legal status — through universities, vocational programs, or language courses with the subsequent possibility of staying.
After the temporary protection ends, there is a transition period of up to one year. During this time, it is necessary to change the status. Without work or education, it will be practically impossible to do this.
These changes mean that Ukrainians should already plan their future status in Germany to avoid losing their right to reside after 2027.
Recall that the European Union is considering the possibility of extending temporary protection for Ukrainians into the sixth year.
