Findings from the CBS News and YouGov Survey
A poll conducted by CBS News and YouGov following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Donald Trump's administration and Iran reveals that 78% of Americans support an immediate halt to the war. At the same time, 69% of respondents—including 45% of Republicans—doubt the agreement will actually halt Iran's nuclear program. A majority of those surveyed (57%) believe the conflict has created more problems than it has solved.
The study also found that:
- 22% of Americans favor continued pressure on Tehran;
- 22% view the deal as more advantageous for the United States;
- 37% are convinced the agreement primarily benefits Iran;
- 41% consider the terms to be balanced.
Meanwhile, 39% of Republicans see the signed document as a win for the U.S., while 45% of citizens say the four-month military campaign failed to achieve strategic success.
Public Opinion on the Agreement
The public also widely believes the deal will not prevent Iran from threatening other nations (68%), will not make its leaders pro-American (79%), and will not guarantee safety or freedom for the Iranian people (74%). Notably, 21% of respondents think the war resolved more issues than it created. 37% of citizens see Iran as weaker than before the conflict began, 38% believe Iran has maintained its previous strength, and 25% are convinced Iran has grown stronger.
Furthermore, 64% of those polled—including 51% of Republicans—believe the war's impact on the global economy has been far greater than the administration anticipated. The White House's initial forecasts predicted a conflict lasting 4 to 6 weeks, but the war dragged on for nearly four months. Two-thirds of Americans concluded that Trump agreed to the deal because he wanted to end the conflict.
Negotiations between Iranian and U.S. representatives took place in Switzerland on June 21. Vice President JD Vance emphasized that his main priorities in talks with Iran are:
- establishing a framework for dialogue;
- making progress on nuclear issues;
- achieving a ceasefire in Lebanon.
The poll results highlight deep divisions within American society over foreign policy, particularly regarding relations with Iran and the impact of military conflicts on national security.
The signing of the memorandum of understanding, which has become a topic of debate, reflects the Trump administration's attempt to find alternative paths to resolve the conflict. However, the public's lack of trust could complicate the implementation of these plans. Moving forward, it will be important to monitor both domestic and international reactions to the outcomes of these negotiations.
As public sentiment shifts towards ending military involvement, discussions are intensifying around a potential 60-day ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran. This proposed truce, which is being negotiated under stringent conditions, reflects the growing desire among Americans for a diplomatic resolution rather than continued conflict.
