The American airline Southwest Airlines, known for positioning itself as one of the safest low-cost carriers in the world, has decided to make changes to its policy regarding overweight passengers. According to the updated rules, which will take effect on January 27, 2026, this category of passengers will be required to purchase an additional seat if they do not fit between the armrests of the seat.

Previously, overweight passengers could buy a second ticket, which was guaranteed to be refunded upon arrival, or request a free seat at the airport. However, now the airline no longer guarantees a refund for the second ticket if there are no available seats on the flight.

Southwest Airlines introduced these new measures regarding overweight passengers as part of a strategy aimed at increasing profits. The company is implementing new paid services, including seats with extra legroom and overnight flights, in line with investors' demand for revenue growth.
