Venturi, a US-based private space company established in May 2026, has introduced the Alta Luna—a compact, single-seat tracked lunar rover developed to support operations near upcoming lunar outposts as part of NASA’s Artemis program. Venturi aims to contribute significantly to lunar exploration and long-term settlement.

In May 2026, NASA announced Venturi’s role in creating the CLV-1 lunar vehicle for Artemis. The Alta Luna rover, featuring continuous tracks instead of wheels, is designed to carry one astronaut and navigate steep inclines more effectively. Weighing 300 kg on Earth, Alta Luna incorporates advanced autonomous capabilities using LiDAR, stereoscopic cameras, and artificial intelligence.

Capabilities and Mission Support of Alta Luna

The Alta Luna rover is equipped to perform a wide range of tasks, including:

  • Transporting equipment and supplies;
  • Conducting earth-moving and excavation work;
  • Surveying and preparing terrain for construction.

Designed to operate both independently and in teams, Alta Luna facilitates route planning and infrastructure development on the lunar surface. Its onboard electronics interface directly with the astronaut’s spacesuit to monitor vital health data. If any health issues are detected, the rover can autonomously return to base to provide assistance.

Additionally, Alta Luna’s user interface delivers real-time travel information and emergency alerts, such as solar storm warnings. Its power system relies on batteries integrated within the CLV-1 vehicle. Venturi conducts research across the US and Europe and showcased Alta Luna at the International Space Summit held in Paris.

In collaboration with Astroport Space Technologies, Venturi Astrolab tested a specialized lunar excavator integrated with the Astrolab-developed Flexible Logistics and Exploration (FLEX) rover. During field trials, the system moved an average of 94 kg of lunar regolith within just 3.5 minutes.
