The MV Anuanua Moana Expedition
Owned by American Ocean Minerals (AOMC), the research vessel MV Anuanua Moana has wrapped up its Expedition 7 mission. During this campaign, the team collected 60 cores and 62 multicore samples, totaling 4,059 individual specimens. These materials—including sedimentary rock, macrofauna, meiofauna, foraminifera, and environmental DNA—will be analyzed for polymetallic nodules rich in manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper.
This expedition marks a major milestone in deep-sea mineral exploration. Hans Smith, CEO of Ocean Minerals LLC, described Expedition 7 as
“one of the most productive benthic baseline campaigns in the entire deep-sea minerals industry.”
Objectives and Outcomes of the Campaign
The initial plan called for surveying 45 priority sites. Data gathered will inform an Environmental Impact Assessment report, expected to be submitted in the first half of 2027. All research activities were conducted under the oversight of Cook Islands regulators, underscoring the strong focus on environmental considerations in ocean resource extraction.
- The MV Anuanua Moana research vessel measures 60 meters in length.
- It serves as a key tool in modern marine exploration.
The completion of Expedition 7 reflects growing momentum in deep-sea mineral research and extraction, with significant economic and environmental implications. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and its own dedicated vessel, AOMC can conduct more frequent and detailed surveys, boosting data collection efficiency. The involvement of Cook Islands regulators further emphasizes that ecological safety remains a top priority as this industry develops.
