Andriy Shevchenko's Career Crossroads

Ukrainian football legend Andriy Shevchenko nearly joined Italian side Roma late in his career, but ultimately decided to stay at Chelsea. This pivotal moment came during discussions in 2005 with then-Roma manager Luciano Spalletti, who personally invited Shevchenko to the club. The decision on the potential transfer was made in just three days, yet the striker opted to remain in London, hoping for more playing time with the English club. This choice highlights the complex decisions top players face when managing their careers.

After two seasons in the Premier League, Shevchenko did return to Serie A, but he chose AC Milan, the club where he had previously enjoyed immense success. With Milan, he won the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia, the Supercoppa Italiana, the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League, and the UEFA Super Cup. Following a season back at Milan at the start of the 2009/10 campaign, Shevchenko returned to his boyhood club, Dynamo Kyiv.

Roma's Ukrainian Connections and Shevchenko's Legacy

Interestingly, the first Ukrainian to actually play for Roma was Artem Dovbyk, who joined the club in the summer of 2024. Under Spalletti's management during that earlier era, Roma won two Coppa Italia titles and finished as Serie A runners-up three consecutive times, losing the title to Inter Milan. The leader of that Roma team was the iconic Francesco Totti. For context, Serie A in the 2000s was one of the world's most competitive leagues, featuring several legendary players and teams.

Andriy Shevchenko, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2004 as the third Ukrainian to receive the award, remains the all-time top scorer for the Ukrainian national team with 48 goals in 111 appearances. He represented Ukraine at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012. In 2016, he took over as head coach of the national team and was elected President of the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) in 2024.

Shevchenko's choice to stay at Chelsea instead of moving to Roma proved a defining career moment, as his greatest triumphs were achieved during his time with AC Milan.
