Abnormal Cold Snap Forecast for Ukraine

According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, an abnormal cold wave is expected to cover Ukraine from February 1st to 3rd, 2026. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) has declared a Level III (red) danger alert for a number of regions, indicating serious risks associated with the sharp temperature drop. Such alerts are issued when conditions pose a significant threat to life and infrastructure.

On January 31st, the western, northern, and Vinnytsia regions will see no precipitation, with nighttime lows of -12°C to -17°C and daytime highs of -9°C to -14°C. In Zakarpattia, temperatures will range from -3°C to 2°C throughout the day. The rest of Ukraine will experience snow, with a mix of rain and snow in the southeast. The southern, most central, and Kharkiv regions are forecast for icy conditions and wet snow accumulation. Elsewhere, temperatures will remain between -5°C and -10°C for the day.

Weather Forecast and Associated Hazards

In the Azov Sea region and Luhansk, temperatures will fluctuate from -3°C to 2°C, while in Crimea, they will range from 1°C to 6°C. Icy patches are expected on roads across the country, with northeasterly and northerly winds of 7-12 m/s. In northeastern Ukraine, wind gusts may reach 15-20 m/s. Kyiv region and the capital will have cloudy weather with clear spells, no precipitation, but with icy roads. Nighttime temperatures in Kyiv region will be -12°C to -17°C, and daytime highs -9°C to -14°C. In Kyiv city, nighttime temperatures will range from -13°C to -15°C, and daytime from -10°C to -12°C.

Starting February 1st, a powerful Arctic anticyclone will envelop the country, leading to a significant temperature drop and increased danger to the population.

The declaration of a Level III danger alert signifies serious risks to public health and safety, particularly for vulnerable groups like the elderly and those with disabilities. During severe frost, it is crucial to follow SES safety guidelines, which include avoiding prolonged exposure outdoors and ensuring adequate heating in homes.
