Record-Breaking Cold Grips Ukraine
Ukraine is experiencing a severe cold wave, with the lowest temperatures recorded at -23°C (-9°F) in two regions. This extreme cold was registered in the Zhytomyr and Kyiv oblasts, specifically in the towns of Ovruch and Piskivka. The night of January 17, 2026, marked the coldest night of the winter so far, highlighting the severity of the weather conditions. Such deep winter freezes are a significant test for the country's infrastructure and energy systems.
Other regions are also seeing frigid conditions. In Cherkasy Oblast, temperatures in Uman and Zhashkiv dropped to -17°C (1°F). The temperature on the snow surface fell to -21°C (-6°F), indicating a substantial drop in air temperature. Overnight lows of -15°C to -20°C (5°F to -4°F) were recorded across Ukraine, with Khmelnytskyi and Vinnytsia oblasts experiencing localized lows of -22°C to -25°C (-8°F to -13°F). Forecasts and Official Warnings
Meteorologists forecast a further drop in temperatures. A predominantly northeastern wind, blowing at 5-10 m/s (11-22 mph), is expected to worsen the wind chill factor. According to meteorologist Natalka Didenko,
"The cause of this abnormal cold is an anticyclone – either the Asian or Central Asian high-pressure system." - Natalka Didenko
These conditions are likely to impact daily life, and residents are advised to exercise caution and take measures to protect themselves from the cold.
The abnormally cold weather observed in January could lead to serious consequences for the population, including:
- increased heating costs;
- health risks, especially for vulnerable groups;
- negative impacts on agriculture;
- disruptions to transport infrastructure.
In light of this, it is crucial to follow expert recommendations and be prepared for potential disruptions to normal living conditions.
