Japanese Drone Tested for Landmine Detection in a Field Near Kyiv for the First Time

Prodrone Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Put to the Test

A drone developed by Japan's Prodrone has been trialed just outside Kyiv, designed specifically to locate antipersonnel mines. The initiative receives backing from international bodies, including the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). During the tests, the aircraft operated at roughly 30 centimeters above ground, scanning both surface-placed and buried munitions—the latter concealed at depths of up to 15 centimeters. All ordnance used had been previously neutralized.

Ukraine's Ongoing Challenge with Antipersonnel Mines

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES), roughly 130,000 square kilometers of the country remain potentially hazardous. Prodrone representatives emphasized that antipersonnel mines are an insidious threat, blocking civilians from returning to daily life, farming, and rebuilding infrastructure for years. The newly tested drone aims to streamline the detection of these dangers.

Among the explosive hazards still posing a risk are:

  • antipersonnel mines
  • antitank mines
  • unexploded shells
  • cluster munition remnants

In a related development, the Ukrainian firm General Cherishnya has advanced to the second round of the Drone Dominance Program. This highlights a growing global push for innovative tools to tackle mines and other explosives.

The Prodrone trial marks a significant milestone in Ukraine's broader demining efforts across conflict-affected areas. Research indicates that drone-based detection technologies can greatly improve both the efficiency and safety of clearance operations. At the same time, the participation of a Ukrainian company in international programs underscores the nation's commitment to adopting cutting-edge security and demining solutions, which could accelerate recovery in war-torn regions.
