Exploring the Depths of the Mar del Plata Canyon

On September 20, 2023, Argentine scientists shared findings from their investigation of the Mar del Plata deep-sea canyon in the Atlantic Ocean. Using a remotely operated vehicle, the team discovered human-made waste, including plastics and fishing gear, at depths ranging from 878 to 3820 meters. Their expedition uncovered 29 distinct pieces of debris alongside approximately 40 potentially new marine species. These insights were published in the scientific journal PLOS One.

The debris collected during the study included:

  • A packet of instant noodles
  • Wrapper from Korean sausage
  • Rubber boot

Much of the waste is linked to commercial fishing and maritime traffic, with ocean currents capable of carrying these materials far from shore. Remarkably, some deep-sea organisms were found to utilize plastic and ropes as artificial surfaces for colonization.
