Forecast for Kyiv and the Kyiv Region
An Arctic anticyclone moving in from Scandinavia is set to deliver a severe cold snap to Kyiv and the surrounding region from January 31 to February 4. The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center has issued a warning for a significant temperature drop during this period. Such deep freezes, while not uncommon in Eastern European winters, pose serious risks to infrastructure and public health.
The peak of the cold is expected from February 1 to 3. During this time, overnight temperatures in the Kyiv region could plummet to -22 to -27 degrees Celsius (-8 to -17 degrees Fahrenheit), with localized areas potentially reaching -30°C (-22°F). Daytime highs in the region will range from -14 to -20°C (7 to -4°F). Temperatures in the city of Kyiv itself will be slightly higher than in the wider region. Specifically, on January 31, the capital is forecast to see overnight lows of -13 to -15°C (9 to 5°F) and daytime highs of -10 to -12°C (14 to 10°F).
Forecasters also noted that winds in Kyiv will be northeasterly at speeds of 7-12 meters per second. No precipitation is expected during this period. Experts from the Hydrometeorological Center explained that 'this vortex, centered near Scandinavia, formed in Arctic air masses, meaning dry, frigid air will flow into our area via northern and northeastern currents.'
Cold Weather Precautions and Advice
Residents should prepare for the sharp temperature decline and take necessary precautions against the cold. The forecasted freeze could have serious consequences for the population, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with chronic health conditions.
- Exercise caution.
- Limit time spent outdoors.
- Ensure proper insulation of living spaces.
The cold snap is also likely to strain energy resources as demand for heating surges.
