From September 1, 2026, the salary of a teacher assistant is 13,865 or 14,731 UAH depending on teaching experience. This is the base amount for allowances, which should be distinguished from the average salary in education. This is reported by the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Ukraine.
Teacher assistant salary: rates and allowances in 2026
The new payment scheme provides the following rates:
-
13,865 UAH for teaching experience of up to five years inclusive;
-
14,731 UAH for experience over five years.
The total teaching experience is taken into account, not just the work as an assistant. Certification in this position confirms compliance with the position held but does not imply the assignment of qualification categories.
For work in an inclusive class, a 20% allowance of the rate is established. This amounts to 2,773 or 2,946.20 UAH respectively. The prestige allowance in schools is at least 20%. There are also provisions for seniority, health benefits, and other payments based on appropriate grounds.
When calculating the full rate, including the 20% inclusion allowance and the minimum 20% prestige allowance, it results in 19,411 or 20,623.40 UAH before taxation. This is an example of calculation without seniority and other payments, not a uniform salary for all assistants.
The inclusion allowance is calculated based on the appropriate hours worked. At the same time, the temporary absence of all students with special educational needs due to illness or other reasons does not reduce this payment.
An additional 2,600 UAH for unfavorable working conditions is already included in the new salaries. Adding this again to all employees is incorrect: a separate payment is preserved for designated communities in frontline and border areas under established conditions. When comparing with salaries in job vacancies, it is also necessary to clarify whether the specified amount is before taxes or net.
Teacher assistant workload: why the rates are insufficient for all lessons in 2026
The teaching workload for an assistant is 25 hours per week. The staffing regulations provide for one rate per inclusive class, although in grades 5–9, the curriculum may cover 31–36 hours.
Thus, the difference is 6–11 hours per week without accounting for class division into groups. The union emphasizes that current regulations do not ensure the presence of an assistant in every lesson. Additional positions can be introduced at the expense of the local budget or the school's own revenues.
The assistant's responsibilities include supporting students with tasks and attention, adapting materials, joint planning with the teacher, participation in the development of individual development programs, and communication with parents.
Therefore, the 25 hours of teaching load should not be equated with all working time: the position also includes methodological and organizational work. Such support is part of ensuring accessibility of education in schools.
