The J2318 Quasar Discovery

Astronomers have detected an exceptionally powerful ultraviolet gas outflow from the quasar J2318, located in the constellation Pegasus, accelerating to 30% of the speed of light—the fastest such flow ever recorded. This finding, published in The Astrophysical Journal by a team from York University, was uncovered through archival data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Student researcher Marianne Veltry first noticed unusual spectral signatures in the object's data, prompting further investigation. The quasar's black hole has a mass of 1.7 billion solar masses, a substantial figure.

Professor Patrick Hall, a lead researcher, commented:

'The black hole's mass itself is fairly typical, but the gas outflow speed far exceeds anything we've seen before.'
