Drone Assault on Leningrad Region: Strategic Port Hit and 33 UAVs Downed

Атака безпілотників на Ленінградську область: уражено важливий порт, знищено 33 дрони.

Drone Attack Strikes Leningrad Region

In the early hours of March 25, a drone attack targeted Russia's Leningrad Region, resulting in the destruction of 33 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A key target was the strategic oil terminal at the port of Ust-Luga, where a fire broke out. This port is a critical facility for Russian energy exports, handling the daily export of approximately 700,000 barrels of oil. Last year, the total volume of oil products processed through the Ust-Luga terminal reached nearly 33 million tons. This attack highlights the vulnerability of Russia's critical energy infrastructure, which has become a frequent target in the ongoing conflict.

Response to the Threat

In response to the threat, Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg activated its 'Carpet' contingency plan, leading to a temporary suspension of all inbound and outbound flights. This caused cancellations and delays for routes to Moscow, Istanbul, and Dushanbe. Regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko commented on the incident, stating:

“Thirty-three UAVs were destroyed by air defense and electronic warfare systems.” - Alexander Drozdenko

This incident is part of an escalating series of drone attacks on various Russian regions. A previous attack on the night of March 11 targeted several areas, including the south and center of the country, with the most intense strikes reported in the Samara region, where at least 10 explosions were recorded over the cities of Samara and Syzran. Another strike occurred on the night of March 8 in Armavir, Krasnodar Krai, targeting the JSC 'NP NB YUNK' facility. A further attack was reported on February 22 in the cities of Saratov and Engels, where around ten explosions were registered.

The situation regarding drone attacks within Russia remains tense, causing public concern and demanding enhanced security measures. Strikes on strategic assets like the Ust-Luga port underscore the vulnerability of the country's infrastructure and could have serious economic repercussions. Increased security at airports and around critical infrastructure sites is likely to become the new normal under the persistent threat of such assaults.

In light of the recent drone strikes, the implications for Russia's energy exports have become even more pronounced. The attack not only affected the Ust-Luga port but also led to significant disruptions at St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport.
