Fire Breaks Out at Abu Dhabi Oil Refinery
A fire caused by a drone attack has forced the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to temporarily suspend operations at its refinery in Al Ruwais. The shutdown was enacted as a safety precaution, though other facilities at the industrial site continue to function. The Al Ruwais complex is a major refining hub for the United Arab Emirates, with a total capacity of up to 922,000 barrels of oil per day. This incident highlights the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure in the region.
Aftermath of the Attack
Following the March 8th attack, which was part of a broader aerial assault on the UAE by Iran, authorities in Abu Dhabi confirmed the refinery fire. The UAE's Ministry of Defense reported that Iran launched 16 ballistic missiles and over 117 drones. According to UAE air defense systems, all 16 missiles were intercepted (with one falling into the sea), and the vast majority of drones were also shot down. Four drones managed to impact UAE territory, but no casualties were reported.
The shutdown specifically affected one of the crude distillation units at the Ruwais Refinery 2, which has a capacity of approximately 417,000 barrels per day. ADNOC is considering a full, temporary shutdown of the facility to ensure complete safety.
This event underscores the escalating regional tensions in the Middle East, particularly between the UAE and Iran. An attack on a major refinery has the potential for serious repercussions on the energy market, given Al Ruwais's importance to oil supply. In response, UAE authorities are implementing security measures that could affect regional oil production and shipments in the near term.
