Atalanta's Coaching Future in Flux

Bergamo-based Serie A side Atalanta is preparing to dismiss head coach Raffaele Palladino. According to a report from Glavkom, citing insider Nicolò Schira, the team's performances under Palladino have failed to convince. Atalanta was eliminated from the Champions League playoffs, raising the risk of missing out on European competition entirely next season.

Palladino's contract runs through the summer of 2027. He took over in November, following the start of the season under Croatian manager Ivan Juric. Palladino replaced Gian Piero Gasperini, who left the club last summer after a nine-year tenure.

Club Restructuring and Season Performance

This summer, Atalanta plans to change its sporting director, with former Napoli and Juventus executive Cristiano Giuntoli appointed to the role. Giuntoli has already expressed interest in bringing in Thiago Motta as the new head coach.

Atalanta's 2025/26 season has produced mixed results:

  • Reached the Coppa Italia semifinals, where they lost to Lazio on penalties.
  • Eliminated in the Champions League Round of 16, suffering a 10-1 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich.
  • Currently sit seventh in Serie A with 58 points, with just two matchdays remaining.

Key fixtures against Bologna (May 17) and Fiorentina (May 24) will be decisive for their European hopes.

Raffaele Palladino, a native of the Naples suburbs, came through the youth systems of Benevento and Juventus. He made his senior debut with Juventus, playing two full seasons and winning the Serie B title in the 2006/07 campaign. Throughout his career, he represented Genoa, Parma, Crotone, and Spezia, and earned three caps for the Italian national team. Before joining Atalanta, Palladino managed Monza and Fiorentina, where he guided the latter to a sixth-place finish in Serie A and a spot in the Conference League semifinals.

A coaching change at such a critical juncture of the season could impact player morale and motivation. Simultaneously, the appointment of a new sporting director and the potential hiring of Thiago Motta signal the club's determination to explore fresh approaches, aiming to improve results and restore competitiveness both domestically and on the European stage.

As Atalanta navigates its coaching changes, the situation at rival clubs like Milan also raises questions about managerial stability. Following a disappointing season, Milan is considering a change in leadership, highlighting the pressure on Serie A teams to perform consistently. Both clubs face critical decisions that could shape their futures in Italian football.
