Audi Trials Humanoid Robots to Advance Manufacturing Automation

On November 2, 2023, Audi initiated trials of mobile humanoid robots created by Agile Robots at their Ingolstadt factory in Germany. This initiative brings together four major players—Audi, Agile Robots, Dassault Systèmes, and NVIDIA—with the goal of automating the selection and sorting of components during vehicle assembly. These robots, standing at human height and equipped with dual-arm manipulators on wheeled bases, are designed to navigate and operate within production environments.

The project leverages virtual simulation platforms developed by Dassault Systèmes, including DELMIA and 3DEXPERIENCE, to optimize integration. Agile Robots’ Agile One units are engineered to function within existing industrial settings without requiring costly factory redesigns, streamlining their adoption into current workflows.

Future Potential and Challenges Ahead

Currently in the proof-of-concept phase, the project has no set timeline for full deployment. Gerd Walker, Audi AG’s Board Member for Production and Logistics, emphasized the longstanding complexity of automating sequential parts picking in automotive logistics and highlighted the collaboration’s aim to harness AI-driven robotics to overcome these challenges and boost factory productivity.

"For decades, assembling components in a specific order has been one of the toughest automation challenges in automotive logistics. Together with our partners, we are now exploring how AI-based robotics can tackle this issue and elevate productivity at our plants." - Gerd Walker, Audi AG

This collaboration also underscores the growing importance of multi-industry partnerships in technology development. In March 2026, Agile Robots signed a strategic agreement with Google DeepMind to develop AI-powered robots based on the Gemini models. These robots are expected to find applications beyond automotive manufacturing, including electronics production, data centers, and logistics operations.

Audi’s experimentation with humanoid robots marks a significant milestone in integrating cutting-edge technology into manufacturing processes and could pave the way for wider advances in automation.

The deployment of humanoid robots at Audi reflects an accelerating trend of automation across the automotive sector. By joining forces with leading tech companies, Audi aims to streamline production, reduce costs, and enhance operational efficiency. This innovation not only has the potential to transform car manufacturing but also other industries where robotics and artificial intelligence are increasingly essential for maintaining competitive advantage. Successfully bringing such projects to fruition will open new avenues for research and innovation in automation and robotics worldwide.

As Audi explores the integration of humanoid robots into their manufacturing processes, advancements in robotics are being made across various institutions. For instance, ETH Zurich recently developed a sophisticated ACP control system that enables their humanoid robot G1 to climb ladders and navigate obstacles, showcasing the potential for enhanced mobility and adaptability in robotic applications. This progress further emphasizes the transformative impact of robotics in diverse operational environments.
