Ukrainian Players Face Widespread Exits at Australian Open 2026

The third day of the main draw at the Australian Open 2026 proved disastrous for Ukraine's tennis players, who suffered defeats across both singles and doubles matches. In singles, 25-year-old Oleksandra Oliynykova fell to world number nine Madison Keys with a score of 6:8, 1:6. In another match, Angelina Kalinina was defeated by Wang Xinyu by a score of 3:6, 3:6. Notably, Kalinina managed just one ace during the match, while her opponent Wang Xinyu served ten.

Ukrainian Contenders Eliminated

Five of the six Ukrainian women in the singles draw have now been eliminated, including:

  • Marta Kostyuk
  • Dayana Yastremska
  • Yuliia Starodubtseva

The sole Ukrainian representative remaining in the tournament is Elina Svitolina, who has advanced to the second round. The Australian Open is one of tennis's four Grand Slam events, making early exits particularly significant for players' rankings and morale.

In the doubles competition, the pairing of Lyudmyla Kichenok and Kateryna Volynets also met with defeat. They lost their first-round match with a score of 10:8, 4:6, 4:6. This series of results marked a profoundly difficult day for Ukrainian tennis at the prestigious tournament.

Oleksandra Oliynykova commented on the situation, stating: 'I need your help to protect Ukrainian children and women, but here I cannot speak about it.'

The events of this day at the Australian Open 2026 underscore the challenges faced by Ukrainian athletes on the international stage, particularly amid the ongoing socio-political situation in their homeland. The loss of most of the nation's representatives at this stage of the tournament raises questions about the immediate prospects for Ukrainian tennis. However, Elina Svitolina's continued presence in the draw offers a glimmer of hope for the country's sports fans.
