Anatolii Vovnianok's Vision for Countering Russian Drones
Anatolii Vovnianok, an aircraft designer renowned for his work on the colossal An-225 'Mriya', has proposed that Ukraine should upgrade its fleet of L-39 trainer jets or develop a new domestic light attack aircraft to counter Russian 'Shahed' kamikaze drones. He argues that employing expensive multi-role fighters like the F-16 is unnecessary for this specific mission. This suggestion comes as Ukraine seeks cost-effective air defense solutions against the persistent threat of low-cost, mass-produced drones.
Vovnianok emphasized that the L-39 represents an ideal, inexpensive platform already available in Ukraine. He stated it could be readily modified by mounting a large-caliber machine gun or cannon to effectively destroy 'Shahed' drones. According to him, developing such an aircraft is not a complex challenge, as Ukrainian engineers possess the requisite knowledge and resources to execute the project.
Proposals for a New Light Attack Aircraft
Beyond upgrading the L-39, Vovnianok also suggested creating a Ukrainian equivalent to the Brazilian Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano. He believes a new airframe could be built around the engine from the Antonov An-24 turboprop and equipped with heavy machine guns. He further noted that trainer aircraft are fully capable of carrying significant combat payloads, including bombs and missiles.
Vovnianok pointed to global trends, citing the light combat aircraft South Korea produces and Poland purchases as an example. He urged Ukraine to pay attention to and adapt these trends for its own needs to efficiently counter the threat posed by Russian drones.
Given the constant drone threats, Vovnianok's ideas could mark a significant step in enhancing Ukraine's defensive capabilities. Modernizing existing aircraft or developing new models would lower armament costs while ensuring effective airspace protection. Crucially, these initiatives could be implemented far more rapidly than procuring new, expensive fighter jets, a factor of immense operational importance in a wartime context.
